The Girl in Room 12 - Kathryn Croft - English
As I cook risotto for my family, I glance at the kitchen clock. My husband Max is late home again. He’s been so distracted lately – snapping at our little daughter Poppy, burying himself in work, arriving home in the early hours of the morning. I feel so alone. Why won’t Max tell me what’s on his mind?Poppy chatters about her day but my attention is caught by a news story. A young woman called Alice has been found dead in the River Walk Hotel, just minutes from our house. I switch the television off, my mind spinning. Alice looks familiar but I can’t work out why.
After I put my daughter to bed, I head to our bedroom. It’s usually a calm tranquil place but Max’s clothes from yesterday lie crumpled on a chair. I pick up his expensive navy suit and try to smooth out the creases. But when I place my hand in the pocket to remove the loose change my fingers clasp something, smooth and solid.
A key card. And the only words on it are The River Walk Hotel…
